It came at the right time! GreenOvation is in response to our country’s urgent need to stimulate interest in and applications of green practices and innovations among our MSMEs via mobile APPs whilst simultaneously enhancing their competitiveness and digital literacy.
GreenOvation is a Mobile Application Competition aimed at supporting green initiatives of MSMEs (energy efficiency, materials efficiency, water savings and waste water management, solid waste management, transport management, supply management and natural resource management) in the Philippines. It is held within the aegis of the Promotion of Green Economic Development (ProGED) Project, which is jointly implemented by the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (represented by the Department of Trade and Industry) and Federal Republic of Germany (represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development working through the GIZ).
With DTI and GIZ in the lead, the competition was successfully implemented with support from Peace and Equity Foundation, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, IdeaSpace, GoNegosyo, Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), Raket.ph, ImpactHub Manila and Katalyst.ph. The campaign kicked-off with a PressCon held last 15 July 2015 at the DTI Conference Room. More than 30 teams heeded the call which ended last 15 August 2015 and 23 teams were selected to compete in the different face to face to rounds.
Applicants came from a wide range of background. The youngest was a male of 15 and the oldest was a female of 73 but mostly are in their 20s. Fourteen were professionals, eight were aspiring StartUps and four students are from Philippine Science High School. Resource efficiency got 15 entries and solid waste management eight entries. Additional support needed includes commercialization, market development, business management, funding and information database. Majority favored Android over other platforms.
The 23 entries went through three rigorous elimination rounds: Round 1 on Business Model selected ten teams, Round 2 on Prototyping and Market fitness left five: EnSa (or energy savings), InvesTree (on natural resource management), Resiklo (waste recycling), Shakestop (resilience during disasters) and Wrapp (green packaging materials). Last October 3, OneWatt (formerly EnSa) was selected winner by the board of judges.
In the next few days, we will feature through videos the GreenOvation entries. For those who are interested to contact the team, please feel free to do so.
